It’s been a busy period of late and getting everything done in time seems to take forever when you’re chief whip, artist, bottle washer and tea lady… However, it’s great to be here and be able to share this latest News with you.
Some background to the music
By now you will note that there are three tracks that have been released for the upcoming EP Intercontinental Man.
Click on the images below to view the tracks on Youtube, and if you like what you hear click “like” or leave a comment.
As a reminder, these are pre master releases and not the final product. Each one of these tracks is different and something that is my intention and which I’m proud of. I do not want ‘The Voros Collective’ to be associated with just one genre of music. This goes back to my musical upbringing in South Africa where I played in a lot of cover bands and which was the normal thing to do back in the day (and still is really).
At 16 years old I got my first gig at a place called the Red Fez in Kempton Park. This was a Greek restaurant, and I played with musicians twice my edge. What was great about this gig was that I was playing different styles of music from Jazz to Latin, Greek music to Pop music of the day. It was a great musical education. I was at this restaurant for 18 months. It’s a funny thing that I’ve only ever been in a band up to 18 months from that first restaurant gig at the Red Fez to even playing with e’Void.
Play it live man
The intention with The Voros Collective once again is to get to a point where I can take this music to live audiences. Obviously, this takes time and there’s a lot to think about and consider, because taking a band on the road is very expensive. But I’m a realist and do know this will take time and that it is a ‘slow burner’. As I used to say repeatedly to drum students: “How do you climb a ladder?” Yep! “One step at a time!”
To AI or not AI
Incidentally, this is the first time that I’ve used voice recognition software to produce a Newsletter. Hallelujah! This does really speed up the process but in the same breath I will say that I’m not a fan of AI as such. In not wanting to sound like a hypocrite and slag off everything about AI, what I do feel strongly about is that as long as AI never replaces creativity and is used only as a tool then I’m good with it – like it helped me produce this Newsletter. Every word that you’re reading has been created in my mind and not generated by some AI app that does it for you. Nuff said on that…
Cool or what!
The last track that was released (Cool Mountain Waters) garnered some great comments.
Classy!
A pleasure to listen to great musicians.
Sounds super cool man!
Top class!
I take every single one of these comments very, very seriously. And if you contributed any one of these comments then I thank you from the bottom of my heart because it makes all of this really worthwhile.
Upcoming and the next step
The next track will be released in March. It was my intention to release this in February but in being a realist I know this is not going to happen. And regarding this track… you’re the first to know that I am playing everything on this piece of music coming up. I don’t even have a set title for it yet, however the working title that has been floating around in my head is This World.
The music is a reflection of the chaos currently surrounding us on our planet. But in being an eternal optimist and on a more upbeat note it does resolve positively. I have now finished the structure of this track and am in the process of recording live drums. I’m really excited to share this with you in the near future and to hear what you think. I will also add that there is an element of ‘Phil Collins inspiration’ here.
Below are some pics of me in the work process in the studio.
We’re just about done…
In closing I’d like to again thank those of you who have subscribed and taking an interest in what I do. One of the biggest rewards in life is to have someone interested in what you are doing.
And as I mentioned in a Facebook post quite recently, one of the hardest things to do nowadays is to release original music and get people interested in listening to new music.
This is because music is now consumed in a very different way compared to the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. It started to change in the 2000’s with the internet. With platforms like Spotify, music has become ‘cheap’ in a sense where you can listen to anything you want at the touch of a button.
Back in the day when I was getting into music if you wanted to listen to a certain piece of music and aside from (maybe) hearing it on the radio, you would have to go out and buy the single or the vinyl album – later on CD. This has changed and I fully embrace and appreciate how the music industry has changed. There are some promising aspects to this. One being the fact that as artists we are able to put music online and have someone listening to this within a few minutes in another country. This is a powerful tool to have! The challenge is cutting through all the noise on the internet which day by day gets noisier and noisier.
Getting Intercontinental Man noticed is the primary intention and any help to make this happen will be most welcome.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, have a great rest of February and I look forward to sharing the next piece of music with you very shortly.
