EXAMINATIONS

Georg Voros Drum Teaching Studios offers students the opportunity to take Internationally Accredited Grades (1 to 8) and Diploma examinations. The UK Trinity/Guildhall and Rockschool syllabuses are covered. Both examination boards are accredited by the Department of Education in South Africa which means students can use their practical Grade 8 music examination as a Matric subject. This is a new and exciting move for drumming students in South Africa, where their music studies also have value in mainstream education.

Aside from offering Grade exams, the school also offers more advanced tuition as many students are professional and active-performing drummers in both touring and recording bands. Past and present student credits include Sean Kenselaar (Pieter Smith), Chris Gaylord (Little Sister), Barrie van Zyl (Orkez) and Leon Shaw (Mean Mr Mustard). For advanced students desiring a post Grade 8 formal qualification, the school can prepare them for the Performance Diploma (ATCL and LTCL) offered through Trinity/Guildhall. Rockschool will be introducing their Performance Diploma later this year.

DRUM SET STUDIES

All popular contemporary drumming styles are covered which include rock, jazz, funk, hip hop and metal. Rudimental study is approached with an aim to first master the basic patterns on one surface, before transferring and mastering on the kit. Concepts form part of the study program and are taken from real life playing experiences and situations, designed to promote confidence and a positive attitude (Check out the renowned MOTIVATIONAL book RHYTHM OF THE HEAD by Georg Voros). Reading focus is applied in a step by step basis, using both horizontal and vertical reading approaches. Music performance is an important part of the overall study program and focuses on playing with/without click, groove, feel, form and musicality. Students can focus on part or all of the above while also taking an exam option with either UK Trinity/Guildhall and Rockschool syllabuses offered.

AVAILABLE LESSON FORMATS

Tuition is offered via Focused 1 on 1 lessons and also Specialist 1 on 1 lessons. See below the four options available:

1. Doubles. In this format students receive focused 1 on 1 lessons working completely independently of each other and in separate studios. This means that two students 'share' an hours lesson, but are not affected in any way by the standard or rate of learning of the other student. This format is the most popular choice for students over the age of 12 and forms the bulk of lessons given. Examination orientated students as well as non-examination students can take these lessons. These lessons are taken on an hourly and weekly basis. Call 083 269 2404 or EMAIL for lesson fees.

2. Singles. In this format students receive a more focused 1 on 1 lessons approach as there is only one student in at any time. Therefore the hourly time is not 'shared' with anyone else. Examination orientated students as well as non-examination students can take these lessons. These lessons are taken on an hourly and weekly basis. Call 083 269 2404 or EMAIL for lesson fees.

3. Half Hour Single 1 on 1 lessons. Only available to students 12 years of age or younger. These lessons enjoy the same focused format as Single lessons, but on a half hourly basis. Examination orientated students as well as non-examination students can take these lessons. These lessons are taken on a half hourly and weekly basis. Call 083 269 2404 or EMAIL for lesson fees.

4. NEW Specialist 1 on 1 lessons. These lessons are for Intermediate to Advanced level students who require focused 1 on 1 tuition in specialist areas, but due to job or time restrictions cannot attend lessons every week. These lessons are available on request only and can be booked to suit availability of the student - also depending on the schools lesson time availability. Call 083 269 2404 or EMAIL for lesson fees.
